Spring Cleaning & Home Maintenance

Summer is almost here! Welcome in the new season and get the family together to freshen up your home with some deep cleaning. The temperatures are beginning to start heating up and everything seems to be coming back to life. With the smell of freshly cut grass and flowers blooming, the smell of a musty home can put a damper on all of the excitement of seasons changing. Our homes take a beating during the winter months and especially this year after Hurricane Matthew it is extremely important to check and make sure everything is up to par and running properly.

We have gathered some forgotten places and things that we consider important!

Outdoor Maintenance

Roof- check to make sure all shingles are in place, check for any missing or misplaced shingles. The roof takes a beating all year so be aware of any that look run down, exposed nails, areas that sag, and missing caulk.

Gutters- while you’re already up on the roof you might as well kill two birds with one stone! A clogged gutter can cause more problems to deal with rather than doing the dreaded task beforehand. All that’s needed is a ladder, bucket and gloves to scoop out any gunk, leaves and twigs that have accumulated during the winter. Don’t forget to check the condition that they are in as well, look for any looseness or leaks!

Windows- For the outside, a simple mix of dish detergent and water works wonders; if it is extremely groggy after that mix half white vinegar and half water to really get the rest.

Grills- Everyone loves a good char on the outside of their BBQ, but no one wants to taste last year’s cook-out. Start by turning off any propane then detaching the grates and soaking them in a bucket of hot water and soap. Next, cover the heating areas and take a brush to scrub the top of the hood and sides to get rid of the built up carbon and grease. Take the grates out once soaked for around 10-20 minutes, scrub and rinse off remaining residue. Sweep out any left overs on the bottom then assemble the grill and fire it up!

Patio Furniture- If you can take patio furniture covers off and put them in the wash then proceed with that. If that is not an option, a simple mix of warm water and dish detergent will do the job with a light scrub.

Air Conditioning- North Carolina is hot; don’t make it any worse by risking an AC break down in the month of July. Being proactive about preventative maintenance is the best way to ensure a cool home. Replace any filters needed, check valves and hoses for any leaks, and call an expert if you need any help.

Inside

Furniture covers and drapery- Spring and summer are not only a change of seasons, but also a change of styles! Liven up the house by replacing any furniture covers and drapery with livelier patterns and colors to add a fresh pop to the room. Make sure to set any furniture out of the direct sunlight to avoid any sun damage.

Ceiling Fans & Vents- Springtime brings out the worst in a majority of people’s allergies; don’t make it worse by breathing in more dust and grime then necessary. Take all filters down and replace them, while doing that clean the vents with warm water and soap. Wipe down the tops of the fans and you will be surprised by how much is built up that isn’t visible to the eye.

Replace all batteries- Make this a project to do all at once; replace the major ones like fire detectors and CO2 detectors. Then work your way down to replacing batteries in simple toys, remotes and any other daily house hold items.

Floors and Rugs- Stop two gaps with one bush and do both of these at the same time! Take the rugs outside and beat the dust off, vacuum and stain remove any bad areas then leave outside for at least 12 hours to air out. While your home is rug free take the opportunity to deep clean the hardwood, tile and carpet throughout the home! Just make sure to not trap yourself in a corner waiting for the floor to dry!

De-clutter- Three words; Let. It. Go. Use this rule of thumb; if you haven’t worn it in over two years donate it, if you haven’t used it in one year, recycle it. You’ll be surprised by how much better it feels to have a clean space in front of you.

Wipe down de-cluttered spaces- With so much more room on your counter-tops, pantries, refrigerators and desk; it’s a perfect time to clean all those surfaces. You can use a multi-purpose cleaner on all of these, just be sure to be careful on marble!

Enjoy a freshly cleaned home and well-running home!

Spring Forest

Looking for a little peace and quiet without living out in the country? Spring Forest is just for you, located right in the heart of Rocky Mount, this neighborhood is a little getaway with the quaintness of a quiet sleepy suburb; perfect for taking the dog for a walk or going for a stroll throughout the neighborhood.

Four Seasons has built homes in this neighborhood on Alby St., Jennings Ct. and currently two story homes on Spring Forest Dr., with more following soon after!

SF is tucked in between Bethlehem Rd.  & Old Mill Rd. Spring Forest is conveniently located close to Winstead Avenue Elementary, Rocky Mount High and Rocky Mount Academy. There isn’t a need to drive far for groceries, drinks, or a good meal  because  SF is 2.5 miles off of Sunset Ave near Harris Teeter, Rite Aid, Westridge Grill, HoneyBaked Ham, and my personal favorite; Lou Reda’s (if you haven’t had their sweet potato fries & skillet mac and cheese you’re missing out).

Each home in Rocky Mount has its own personality with original colors that fits the different personas of each home buyer.  The one story homes located on Alby St. and Jennings Ct. give off cottage ambiances that give a cozy feeling far away from the city.

De-stress This Christmas

Its that exciting time of year, Christmas is just around the corner and seems like it came right out of no where, without any warning signs. Now that the holidays are here so is all the hustle and bustle that comes in tow.  It is hard to imagine adding in the social standards that social media now demands. Pictures of your perfectly decorated tree and house, with kids crafts on the weekends to keep little messy fingers occupied while you just try to keep the house clean or in reasonable shape before company arrives.

I just wanted to share a few ideas that are simple but will make a big bang when it comes to Christmas.

First! Whoever says you have to decorate exactly the same every year? I think there is definitely cause for tradition, but the knickknacks that you’ve been given and hoarded over all these years, you don’t have to pull them out this year. Why not change it up? Make Christmas a little more simple this year, with less time stressing and decorating and more time together.  Especially if you have lots of little themes within your decorations. Pick one collection a year to display, this will thin out the Christmas over your house so that you can breathe. This year set out a display of all the snowmen you have, next year bring out the Christmas village. Separate out all of the kid's ornaments they made as a child and put them on a little mini tree that can be set up somewhere special. Make your husband a sports themed tree covered in all his golf, and team ornaments, even add some Panther blue lights with a helmet as the tree topper. If you do not have time and just put some old holiday photos in the frames you already have out, then this holiday picture can stay behind your normal family portrait until next Christmas.

Head over to Seredipity Refined for more decorating tips, click on the picture above to read about her Christmas decorations! I love how she added Christmas to a collection she already had on display!

Second! You do not have to be the hostest mostest. You can be the hostest with the microwave velveeta and rotel with tortilla chips. Put up your tree, put out your 5 favorite knick knacks, buy the pretty throw away Christmas plates and napkins, put a Christmas mug full of candy canes out on the table, hang some regular green and red ornaments from a light fixture, and pin up all your Christmas cards on a wide ribbon to decorate the coat closet door and make all your cards visible, and boom you're done.

tip* hang a command hook upside down, use a binder clip to grab the end of the ribbon and loop over your hook, or just make a loop out of your ribbon. Or hang anything else over a door or picture frame this way!

Click this photo to see tips from Thrify Decor Chick!

tip* These Christmas tree brownies may be the easiest Christmas desert besides a box of Little Debbies, (which are perfectly acceptable to most Christmas gatherings, the kids will love you!)

Third! Do not stress, if you catch yourself stressing over this holiday season, go ahead and get the biggest task out of your way, do it now! I know you cannot move Christmas dinner and get it done with now, but find some way that always makes you panic when that dinner comes around and change it. We're less than a week away when I publish this post, have you wrapped yet, have you made time to enjoy a night with the kids making cookies without rushing? Delegate those last minute chores that need to be done before you head out of town or everyone comes to your house, ban all technology and until chores around the house are done, write a list of options and hang it on the fridge so kids can compete to do the most chores that will get them the most money and get their phone and Xbox back.

If you're going to be rushing anyway, then take the night off and talk about Christmas with your family and play a board game with no cell phones, and curl up to watch Polar Express so you can focus on those around you!

Fourth! Pick a Christmas tree that fits your house, or buy a house to fit your tree.  My family has a habit of buying one that is too tall for our ceilings then the angel has a little bald spot where the ceiling has rubbed the paint off of her head.  Well no worries for next year, I have the perfect place for you to put your tree. The entryway at 6273 Venice Ct. is open to the second floor, and what a better way to decorate that space than to put a nice and tall Christmas tree right there in the entry way. Or wrap the banister in a lighted garland, attach a few ornaments or bows, and voila!

Turn this foyer at 6273 Venice Ct. into...

...this

See more from Heathered Nest on how she decorated this tree in her foyer!

**If your kids have been begging Santa for a puppy, this house also comes with a fenced in backyard. So parents, ask Santa for 6273 Venice Ct. for Christmas.

Thanks for Reading! We hope you have a wonderful Christmas spent with family and friends!

How to give back during the Holidays

The Holidays are supposed to be the best time of the year full of joy and love, but unfortunately for many that isn’t the case. Small donations can make a huge difference for those in need, whether money, toys, food or even your time. Here are a few ways we can contribute to our locals in need

Host an office donation drive.

Call local shelters and donation centers and ask what they are most in need of. Next figure out the logistics of where to set donation bins- best place is a high traffic area. Rally up all the coworkers to bring in one to two small or large gifts, they don’t need to be new but in decent condition.

Host a soldier care package making party.

Being away from loved ones during the Holidays can make serving our country even harder then the courageous act already is. Let a soldier know they are not alone and have your support by hosting a fun package making party. Invite over co-workers, friends, neighbors and family members and bond over supporting a cause bigger then yourself.  Check out www.operationcarepackages.org/Christmas for drop off places and the items most needed.

Don’t forget about our Veterans either! Show them some love, you can send holiday cards to military members through a local American Red Cross chapter that participates in the Holidays for Heroes program.

Adopt a family

Have a grown family? Skip buying gifts for each other and check out the Salvation Army program that lets you “adopt” another family and make their Christmas just a little brighter.  The Rocky Mount Salvation Army has a Christmas Angel Tree program in which “Assists families in need with gifts (toys, clothing, shoes, etc) children ages newborn to 16.” https://www.salvationarmycarolinas.org/rockymount/programs

Donate food

Whatever you have on hand, canned food, or buy meals and bring them to the homeless shelter. A full stomach is a more meaningful gift then materialistic items.  Food banks are in need of non-perishable items, whole grains and canned meats. Ask around for donations and clean out your cupboards at the same time! The smiles you bring are worth whatever cost.

Put together gift baskets & clean out your closets

Like the soldier care packages, get together with friends and make simple essential item packages. There are plenty of ideas online about what is need such as; toothpaste, socks, granola bars, gum, scarves, mittens. Donate any extra coats or clothing you haven’t worn in a year or so, an easy way to let go of all that clutter.

Toys for Tots

Toys for Tots is a program made by the U.S Marines that receives donations and gives unused, unwrapped toys to children in need.  Get your own child involved by going to pick out toys for another kid, teach them the value of giving while spending bonding time.

Give a lending hand

Don’t have any extra to give out this season? Don’t stress, time is just as valuable as gifts. Volunteer at the local Soup Kitchen, homeless center, and Salvation Army.

Don't forget our furry friends!

Volunteer or drop off extra blankets at the local shelter and make a puppies Christmas a little easier.

Custom Home in West Hampton

Have you ever imagined living in a modern day castle? 3201 West Hampton is that dream come true sitting on top of a hill overseeing West Hampton Estates. A custom home that has just been finished, the family really did a wonderful job picking details that make this home a one-of-a-kind masterpiece with dazzling  touches everywhere you look, some subtle and some striking.

The exterior is different than a normal brick home, with a dark mortar that gives it an intriguing appearance accompanied with black railing leading up to a gray front door.

The walkway entrance is detailed with gray stone that lightens the look and ties it all together.

Walking into the front door my eyes are brought immediately to the red stained glass speckled throughout.

The entry way has tall ceilings that hold a beautiful light rustic fixture with a stairway on the left, a beautiful foyer straight ahead looking into the great room and dining room on the right side. Straight ahead is a small archway with cabinets and black counter tops.

The dining room tray ceiling and a center light fixture both modern and unique that draws eyes immediately.

The custom elements really come into play when entering the kitchen greeted with light gray cabinets and beautiful black and white counter tops, as well as glass lights over the kitchen bar.

My favorite part about this home is the extravagant master bath and enormous walk-in closet. The lady of the home decided to put not one, but two chandeliers in her closet as well as a whole wall of wood shelving.

After catching your breath from the closet, the bathroom steals it once again. Dark tile, a stunningly detailed shower and a garden tub overlooking the front yard makes for the perfect spa day, every day.

The great room is full of natural sunlight that pairs perfectly with the high ceilings and black fireplace.

The upstairs hallway has a walkway with a railing that overlooks the whole great room.

Dark carpet may sound off settling to some, but in this home it came together seamlessly.

With three different rooms upstairs all have their own personality and shape,  perfect for the guest or each child’s different taste.

The back porch is screened in and finished with a fan that is going to be great for those burning Carolina summer days.

4333 Deer Ridge Ct.

This week we are highlighting my absolute favorite house listed right now, 4333 Deer Ridge Ct. In the quiet subdivision of Tharrington Way, it is the perfect distance from Rocky Mount or Nashville. Surrounded by rolling country side and white picketed fenced farm land, it makes for a relaxing drive home. Just far enough from the hustle and bustle of the town and avoiding city taxes, Deer Ridge is also conveniently close enough to everything.  This home is on the corner lot, with a large front and back yard holding endless possibilities of outdoor games and gardening. This home is the Gaston floor plan, which offers plenty of space for the whole family with an open floor plan.

Walking into the front door you are greeted with the formal dining room to your left and a straight view into the great room.

The great room makes for the perfect get together space as it is open to a breakfast nook and the kitchen over looks all of it. Modern and elegant lighting throughout the kitchen and dining room give a sleek feel. The breakfast area is my favorite part of this home because it offers a great view of the porch and back yard that would make morning coffee 10x more enjoyable. The bottom floor includes a laundry room and pantry.

The master bedroom is right off the kitchen and offers a calm getaway for the parents with a gorgeous detailed master bathroom and large walk-in closet for those clothes lovers.

The kids don’t have to be far away either, as there are two more bedrooms included on the first floor located on the opposite side of the house and share a full bathroom.

Upstairs is a large unfinished attic that could be made into another room or a kid’s dream play space. Down the hall is bedroom #4 with a walk-in closet. Continuing down the hall is a storage closet, full bathroom and giant bonus room that would be a perfect exercise room or dream den, also with a WIC.

This home makes for the perfect house to have extended family come for the holidays, make it yours today!
